Dementia is a complex condition. Many factors influence an individual’s risk of developing dementia. We cannot change some of these factors, like our age and our genetic makeup. But lifestyle factors like diet, levels of physical activity, smoking, and alcohol consumption are also linked to the risk of dementia, and this information sheet looks at the possible influence of these factors as well.

There is no single straightforward cause of dementia, and no way of definitely preventing it, but it may be possible for each of us to reduce our risk or at least delay the onset of dementia.
