This Monday, four Celtic fans from Giffnock will set off on a mammoth cycle from Seville to Lisbon and raise awareness of dementia.

The 300 mile cycle also celebrates the 50th anniversary of Celtic FC winning the European Cup in Lisbon in 1967. Earlier this year, Billy McNeill, who captained the legendary team, revealed that he is living with dementia.

Cyclists John Carruthers, Andy Tunn, Tony McLaren and John O'Hara will be undertaking the challenge over three and half days (22-25 May) with funds going to charities Alzheimer Scotland and Breathing Space.

Tony McLaren, who is taking part in the cycle  and is also National Coordinator of Breathing Space, Scotland's mental health phone service, said:

"Living with dementia can be a difficult and lonely experience. The guys were keen to  support Alzheimer Scotland, having seen the positive benefits memory cafes and football memory initiatives can have. These types of community initiatives offer vital support to those with the illness and their families.  Breathing Space is obviously another cause close to my heart – the telephone support they are able to provide to people experiencing low mood, depression and anxiety is also a lifeline for many. Current work with PFA Scotland has highlighted the need that many current footballers have to open up when they're feeling down".
