New DVD resource for deaf and hearing impaired people
Early in 2008 Alzheimer Scotland's regional office in Glasgow and East Dunbartonshire set up a Dementia and Deafness Working Group in response to concerns about gaps in support and information for deaf people with dementia and deaf people who are carers of people with dementia.
The Working Group included staff from Deaf Connections and Glasgow Social Work Services Hearing Impairment Team, as well as a representative of the Scottish Dementia Working Group.
DVD
The Working Group has now launched a DVD package which they hope is the start of developing better information and community services for deaf people. The DVD Talking about dementia includes a BSL (British Sign Language) and subtitled version of a Scottish Dementia Working Group film called Listening to the Experts; new footage of the Deaf Carers' Group in Glasgow where carers describe their experience of caring for someone with dementia; and BSL versions of two Alzheimer Scotland leaflets.
Free
This new resource was funded by NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde's Mental Health Collaborative. It will be distributed free of charge to a wide range of organisations across Scotland, particularly those dealing mainly with deaf and hearing impaired people.
