Croftspar Place
(8 Tenancies with on-site 24 hour care and housing support)
Background information
Glasgow City Council Social Work Department commissioned Alzheimer Scotland and Cube Housing Association Ltd to provide a complete supported accommodation service in Springboig for older people with dementia. Cube developed and now manages this new property which comprises 8 single storey, unfurnished flats and Alzheimer Scotland provides a Housing Support and Care at Home service to Cube’s tenants.
Sensitively designed by Adrian Stewart of Chris Stewart Architects, the flats have been built to comply with Communities Scotland ‘Housing for Varying Needs’ Standards with additional consideration given to the needs of people with dementia.
Each flat has a living room/kitchen and bathroom with small private garden/patio area. Assistive technology is incorporated to determine movements within each flat, to determine safety whilst minimising obtrusion.
There is a communal laundry and it is envisaged that there will be a sensory garden to the front of the properties. A staff base is also on site.
Aim of the service
The overall aim is to extend the range and choice of options available to older people with dementia who require support and care on a 24 hour basis. This means that people who require assistance at unusual times of the day, and especially at night, can be supported in a tenanted property.
This service enable individuals to live in these tenancies in the community for as long as possible, so avoiding early admission to care homes.
Accessing the service
To be eligible for a tenancy within Croftspar Place individuals must have a diagnosis of dementia and have been assessed by a social worker as needing this type of specialist support (having met the criteria for Enhanced Residential Support). Referrals must be made to the local social work office with completed assessments or queries then directed to:

Funding
The service is funded through Glasgow City Council Social Work Department and Supporting People monies. Individuals may be required to contribute towards the costs of this service in line with the councils charging policy. Costs for heating and laundry will be divided between the 8 tenancies and incorporated into the rent.
How support is provided
Alzheimer Scotland has a Croftspar Place Service Manager who manages a dedicated team to provide support to the 8 tenants. A minimum of 2 staff present at all times ensures that individuals receive a comprehensive support package. This package covers the individual's personal care, housing and social support needs.
Each individual has a Housing Support Plan and a Care Plan to ensure that support is available at the times that suit them.
Housing support – this service enables individuals to plan and get weekly shopping, pay bills and budget, pick up prescriptions, attend appointments, laundry activities, arrange for repairs and servicing of appliances, keep the home safe and habitable and generally assist with responsibilities as a tenant, eg putting out bins.
Personal care – this service can assist with washing, shaving, dressing and undressing, bathing/showering, going to the toilet, skin and hair care, getting in or out of bed, preparing meals, helping with any dietary needs, attending to health needs, such as remembering to take medication.
Social support – staff help individuals to maintain/develop contacts with family, friends and neighbours, as well as maintaining and developing any community links and interests that they may have.
Limits of the service – staff will do as much as possible to help individuals live in their new homes. However, like any other person with their own tenancy in the community, individuals will continue to access support ranging from, for example, a district nurse to a painter and decorator.
Reviewing support – each person, and those involved their lives, will regularly review the support being provided. If the person is no longer seen to be benefiting from staying at Croftspar Place, then alternative support will be sought.
