Glasgow Dementia Action Group - a voice for carers
We are a group of people who are caring for or who have cared for someone with dementia a relative, friend or neighbour.
The group has been in existence since 1995 and is an independent voice within Alzheimer Scotland.
We are passionate about
- positively influencing the understanding and care of people with dementia and
- raising awareness about the needs and experience of family carers.
What does the group do?
- We raise awareness about dementia and carer issues
- We are actively involved in consultation exercises and strategic planning groups from Health and Social Work
- We keep up-to-date on local and national issues relevant to caring and dementia care
- We attend and contribute to conferences and other events
- We volunteer for media interviews
- We also meet up, chat and have a laugh.
When and where does the group meet?
We meet formally every second month at the Alzheimer Scotland building at 81 Oxford Street, Glasgow; this is usually on Wednesday mornings. For more information about our meetings, contact Anne Burnside. Tel: 0141 418 3936.
We need you!
- Are you now or have you ever been a carer of a person with dementia?
- Do you want to make things better for other carers and the people they care for?Do you feel strongly that information services, training and both policies and practice must be improved?
- Would you like to put your experience and knowledge to good use?
- Can you spare us some of your time?
What could you do?
We recognise that people have different amounts of time or energy. You could choose to become involved with the Glasgow Dementia Action Group as little or as much as suits your interest.
Here are some ideas:
- Simply tell us about your own experiences, good or bad. This keeps us up to date with what is happening for people who are actively involved in caring for person with dementia
- Join us to take part in a discussion group on a specific topic i.e. respite care, care in care homes
- Take part in consultations or social research organised by Health Board, Social Work or Alzheimer Scotland
- Come along to our regular meeting to campaign for better services
- Make links/participate on decision and planning groups
- Attend conferences and events
- Link with similar networks around Scotland
- Make new friends.
Remember you choose what you do and when. You dont have to do everything.
Just joining us will make a difference.
