Training in Dementia Care
Training Courses
The Learning Development Unit offers a variety of courses for Alzheimer Scotland staff and places may be available to external participants. The training unit also provide training programmes, which are SVQ referenced, for external organisations designed to meet their individual needs. We provide training in understanding dementia (see example workshop below).
All courses are planned and delivered to a standard that will ensure people with dementia and their carers receive quality care. Times arranged to suit organisational needs – e.g. full day/half-day/sessional.

Example workshop content - Understanding dementia
(Delivered as a 1 day course)
Aim
To develop and adopt more positive and person-centred approaches to practice.What is dementia?
Objectives:
- To provide information which will give an understanding of dementia and its effect upon individuals and carers.
- To examine how people are affected by the illness
- Myths & attitudes.
Communication and behaviour
Objectives:
- To develop a greater understanding of the ways in which people with dementia communicate
- To assist staff working with people with dementia to minimise communication difficulties
- To identify and understand the behavioural aspects of dementia
- To explore personal responses to an individual’s behaviour.
Presentation method
The workshop will include a combination of presentation, discussion and group-work. Participants will take an active role in identifying needs for discussion.
We are a Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA) Approved Centre providing Scottish Vocational Qualifications (SVQ) Awards in Health & Social Care (Adults) levels 2, 3 and 4 and Leadership in Management in Care level 4.
