Alzheimer Scotland's Walking Football Network

Alzheimer Scotland has launched a National Walking Football Network.

The network is hosted by our partners in North Lanarkshire Council at Ravenscraig Regional Sports Facility and is open to anyone with a diagnosis of dementia.

A previous study by the University of the West of Scotland has shown the numerous benefits of the sport. Taking part in walking football can increase levels of social engagement and interaction, with participants enjoying the camaraderie of being part of a team.
The players in the study had shown great enthusiasm and energy and often had to be reminded to walk as they were running, chasing down the ball, tackling and trying to score goals!

Carers and family members can also benefit as well and there is a breakout space available for them to relax at our weekly sessions.

Players will be given an introduction to the session, followed by few easy movement exercises, then some light work with the ball for 10 minutes before the games. Three 10-minute games with breaks in between will then be played. The football will finish for 4pm for a football reminiscence session. People are advised to come ready (comfortable footwear and clothes for exercising) but there is access to changing rooms if needed.
