Alzheimer Scotland’s charity partner ARRAN Sense of Scotland are stepping up to complete a unique Memory Walk with their local community on the beautiful Isle of Arran.

Kevin Meechan, CEO shared their plans with us:

“As our official charity partner for 2021, we wanted to support Alzheimer Scotland by taking part in the charity’s annual Memory Walk.  We have created our very own Arran Memory Walk on Friday 17th September, where our team will be taking on various walking challenges across the Isle of Arran in an attempt to raise £10,000 for the charity!

Dementia is a cause that’s very close to some of our colleagues’ hearts, and we hope by taking part in the Memory Walk we can raise valuable funds to help support the brilliant work Alzheimer Scotland does to help those living with dementia as well as their carers and loved ones.

With our shared purpose to create meaningful connections with nature, the Memory Walk provides a brilliant opportunity for our colleagues to find out more about the charity and the support schemes available on the island, reconnect with each other and spend time in our beautiful island home.”

Increasing peoples understanding of dementia is a key focus of Alzheimer Scotland’s charity partnerships alongside fundraising activities and forming lasting relationships. Already, staff at ARRAN Sense of Scotland have completed the Dementia Friends programme, delivered by Alzheimer Scotland, to become a Dementia Friendly business.

Speaking of the benefits to the business Kevin tells us:

“The programme provided a wonderful opportunity for our colleagues to learn more about dementia and learn more about the ways in which we can support individuals living with dementia on a daily basis, including within our retail stores. We now have over 25 Dementia Friends within our business and hope this inspires others to take part in the initiative.”

Anybody can become a Scottish Dementia Friend. It’s about understanding a bit more about dementia and the small things you can do to help people living with dementia. Dementia Friends Scotland is an Alzheimer Scotland initiative to raise awareness of dementia and reduce stigma. Dementia Friends Scotland is fully funded by Alzheimer Scotland, fundraised through events like Memory Walk.

Kevin continues:

“We would encourage anyone thinking of fundraising, donating or taking part in the Memory Walk to get involved! Whether it’s setting up your own Memory Walk, donating to a friend or family member’s or simply sharing the event on social media, your support will make a huge difference to the lives of many.

Over 90,000 people are living with Dementia in Scotland who need our support now more than ever, so Alzheimer Scotland’s Memory Walk is a brilliant opportunity to raise funds for a vital cause. Any donation you can spare is greatly appreciated, with as little as a £10 donation helping to run their 24hr Freephone Helpline for 1 hour.”

ARRAN Sense of Scotland will complete their Memory Walk ahead of event weekend on Friday 17th September on the Isle of Arran.

You can support them by donating to their Team page.

Whether you can take part over 18-19 September or on a date of your choosing, we want you to join Scotland’s Memory Walk and make a real difference to people living with dementia who need our support.
