Nicole Munro Bagger 2019

Nicole O’Rafferty from Hamilton has pledged to hike to the top of a Scottish Munro every month in 2019 through her very own ambitious ‘A Munro A Month’ challenge, to help raise funds for Alzheimer Scotland.

Nicole hopes to raise funds for Alzheimer Scotland in memory of her grandad who was diagnosed with dementia and was supported to live at home by the family, until he passed away in 2012.

The student secondary teacher has already bagged two Munros so far this year including Ben Lomond in January, and most recently Ben Chonzie in February with her mum by her side.

With her eye set on conquering Ben Nevis, the highest Munro, later this summer, Nicole says: “I wanted to give something back to Alzheimer Scotland as I know the charity supports families living with dementia right now, that really attracted me more than raising funds for research.

“My grandad was diagnosed with dementia when I was just 12, and at the time I didn’t really understand the diagnosis and what he was going through. He was the best friend I could ever have wished for and has left a big gap in all our lives.

“Every day without fail I would visit him after school where we would chat lots and go out on walks, he also loved to sing and play music.  He loved his garden and being outdoors, so I think he would have been proud of my challenge to explore some of Scotland’s finest sights.”

Isabel Quinn, Sponsored Events Fundraiser from Alzheimer Scotland, said: “We are really impressed by Nicole’s ambitions to walk up a Munro every month during 2019 to help raise funds for Alzheimer Scotland’s community supports. With around 90,000 people living with dementia in Scotland, it is our biggest health and social care challenge and it isn’t going to go away. We’re so grateful to Nicole for helping us to change dementia and to her whole family for their support and wish her well for her forthcoming trek challenges.”

Alzheimer Scotland is urging everyone to do something amazing in 2019 for dementia and help raise vital funds to support Alzheimer Scotland as part of our Change Dementia campaign. Whether you’re taking on the ultimate fitness challenge, sticking to resolution or looking for a fun way to fundraise, there is something for everyone to take part in.
