Many parts of Scotland will be getting a heatwave this week and as much as we get excited to see the sun, we need to remember to stay safe.

While you are enjoying the sun please remember to check on neighbours to make sure they are well if it starts to get too hot outside.

We have put together some top tips for you to enjoy the lovely sunshine with family and friends while keeping safe:

  • spend time in the shade between 11am and 3pm

  • make sure you never burn

  • cover up with suitable clothing and sunglasses

  • use at least factor 30 sunscreen and at least 4-star UVA protection

  • make sure sunscreen is in date

  • drink plenty of fluids

  • check if any of your medication has guidance regarding the warm weather

When you are heading out make sure sunscreen is applied at least 30 minutes before. It's also recommended to reapply sunscreen every 2 hours, as the sun can dry it off your skin.

If you are lucky enough to get to the beach and go for a swim remember to wear a water-resistant sunscreen. The water has a cooling effect and can make you think you are not getting burnt.
