The Green Hands Together project started in 2017 with people with dementia and pupils from St Aidan’s Primary School in Wishaw. This project was funded by Tesco Bags for Help.
The parent council, the school and Alzheimer Scotland decided to host a summer activity in the form of Teddy and A Trowel to encourage the community to come together for a picnic and, if able, participants were asked to bring a small donation for the garden.
Over 50 people attended - from a 3 week old baby to a 93 year old - all planting, playing and eating together.
Lorna Hart-Thomson, Dementia Advisor for Alzheimer Scotland said, "It was truly a magical day. So simple but effective. The participants took part in a scavenger hunt and a teddy game where the groups were intergenerational.
This will now become an annual event which will be about raising awareness of our work, dementia and the importance of community coming together to make something successful."
Alzheimer Scotland offers support for people with dementia, carers and families across the country.
