Margaret’s story

“My mum Ellen was such an upbeat and loving person who always encouraged me and my brothers to get out and try different things.

“Thanks to her encouragement I’ve led quite an adventurous life – backpacking around the world, working abroad for many years and most recently running my own soft furnishings business.

“Mum and I would do everything together and I used to phone her every day. Even when I lived abroad, I’d fly her out for long visits, and at other times we would go on holidays together.

“We lost my dad to a heart attack when he was only 43 so mum raised three of us on her own. It couldn’t have been easy for her but she never complained, and our home was always so calm and happy.

“We started to notice some changes in mum – some forgetfulness and confusion – and in 2019 she was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. She was initially able to live at home but after a fall she ended up in hospital then a care home.

“It was during the pandemic so we weren’t allowed to see her. It was a horrific experience and I believe the stress of it caused my mum’s health to deteriorate rapidly. She passed away in 2022 aged 85.

“When I took over as ladies captain at Blairgowrie Golf Club, I chose Alzheimer Scotland as my nominated charity for the year. The position has given me a platform I wouldn’t otherwise have had so I wanted to raise awareness of dementia, and of the great work the charity does, in memory of mum.

“I’ve been busy organising small fundraising events since December, but I wanted to do a big challenge too that people could get behind.

“That’s when I decided to do 85 holes of golf in one day – and chose the day of my mum’s birthday to do it. I teed off at 4.20am and finished around 9.30pm.

“I wasn’t sure if I’d make it but I’m glad I did. I had a fantastic day and was overwhelmed by the support I’ve had. So many people have spoken to me about their experiences of dementia, so I felt like I was also doing it for them. It’s been quite emotional.

“I was delighted to present Alzheimer Scotland with a cheque for more than £3,600, plus there’s more to come from other events.

“I hope it can make even a small difference to help support Alzheimer Scotland’s amazing work.”

Massive thanks to Margaret for sharing her story in memory of her mum Ellen.
