Dementia: A Person-Led Approach

About the study day

This evidence-informed session explores how dementia support can move beyond task-led and service-led practice to become genuinely person-led. Participants will consider how autonomy, identity, human rights and emotional intelligence shape everyday support. The session introduces the Four Cs of person-led practice – Control, Choice, Consistency and Confidence – and applies them to communication, decision-making, risk, unmet need and daily routines.

Through practical examples, participants will identify where organisational habits can unintentionally reduce agency and develop realistic ways to redistribute power and enable the person to influence what happens next.

What you will learn:

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

  • Explain the difference between person-centred intentions and person-led practice.
  • Describe how autonomy, identity and human rights apply in dementia support.
  • Use the Four Cs—Control, Choice, Consistency and Confidence—to review practice.
  • Recognise how language, routines and risk-averse systems can restrict agency.
  • Apply supported decision-making and emotionally intelligent responses in everyday situations.
  • Identify practical changes that strengthen choice, control and inclusion.
