Dementia Friends Scotland
Anybody can become a Scottish Dementia Friend. It’s just about understanding a bit more about dementia and the small things you can do to help people living with dementia.
What is a Dementia Friend?
Dementia Friends Scotland is an Alzheimer Scotland initiative to raise awareness of dementia and reduce stigma. You can become a Dementia Friend online or you can book a face-to-face session.
With the right support and understanding, people can live well with dementia and contribute to their local community. By taking part in Dementia Friends Scotland, you can learn a little about what it’s like to live with dementia and turn that understanding into action.
What does a Dementia Friend do?
Dementia Friends help people living with dementia in lots of ways, both big and small. From being more patient in a shop queue, to helping someone find the right bus, every action counts.
Dementia Friends Scotland allows you to gain a better understanding of dementia and the things you can do to help people living with dementia be a valued part of their local community. It is not an accreditation or a befriending service and Dementia Friends are not asked to visit people living with dementia. If you are interested in other ways to support people with dementia, check out ways to volunteer with Alzheimer Scotland.

- register online in three easy steps

- arranging a session to be delivered at your workplace or school
You can read more about the Dementia Friends programme in our leaflet.
Arranging or attending an information session
Our Dementia Advisors deliver face-to-face Dementia Friends information sessions all over Scotland. They are free, interactive and informative and will provide you with an understanding of how to interact with people who have dementia.
Through our sessions, five key dementia messages are brought to life through interactive activities. At the end of the session you will become a registered Scottish Dementia Friend. You’ll even receive a certificate and badge.
After the information session we will simply ask that you continue to spread the word about Dementia Friends and use your knowledge to help those who need it.
