Douglas’ story

“I’ve always been an outdoorsy person, so when I retired last year I knew I wanted to take on a big challenge to keep myself busy.

“The West Highland Way has always been on my bucket list, so it seemed like the perfect time to go for it. I also wanted to use the opportunity to raise some funds for Alzheimer Scotland as it’s a charity that’s close to our family.

“My dad Alastair passed away in 2021 aged 93 after living with Alzheimer’s disease for a number of years. My mum Anne was his main carer and I saw firsthand the impact that dementia had on them both, and on the wider family.

“We were very grateful to have had post diagnostic support from Alzheimer Scotland, giving us lots of practical guidance and support, and my mum also found their 24 hour helpline a great resource too.

“After dad passed away, mum moved to a flat in Milngavie which was very close to the starting point of the West Highland Way. I’ve fond memories of the two of us going out for lunch and talking about what it would be like to walk along the route.

“Mum died quite suddenly just a few months ago and that was the final push I needed to start the ball rolling.

“My husband Chris is a great organiser so he took care of pretty much all the planning. I liked the idea of doing the West Highland Way as part of a group so we booked a place with Thistle Trekking, who were great. I walked 96 miles over seven days, alongside people from all over the world.

“I was exhausted at the end of it but really proud to have reached the finishing line. It was such a great experience.

“We set an initial fundraising target of £600 but we’ve been overwhelmed by support from family and friends, and we’re now at more than £1,300.

“I’m delighted to be able to help support the great work of Alzheimer Scotland and I’m already looking out for my next big challenge.”

Thank you to Douglas for sharing his story in memory of his parents.
