Walking for mum
Joanne describes how she’s taking on Glasgow Memory Walk for her mum Evelyn who is living with Alzheimer’s disease.

Joanne’s story
“My mum Evelyn is loving, caring, kind and generous. To me she is the best woman in the world and my best friend.
“She’s always been a bit forgetful but about four years ago we noticed her memory was getting worse and that she was more anxious than usual. One of the early signs was when we got a new cooker and, no matter how we explained it to her, she just couldn’t work out how to use it.
“Then in 2022 she was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s aged just 67. It was a bit of a shock but one of the first things we were told about were Alzheimer Scotland groups at a local community hospital in Cumnock. Mum went regularly and loved it – especially when there was a band or singer.
“She’s such a sociable person and it was great to have somewhere she could go to meet other people and enjoy herself. It also gave my dad Peter a bit of a break too.
“Mum’s always loved music – especially Johnny Cash and Elvis. The two of us would always be singing in the car and even as her dementia has progressed she can still remember the words to some of her favourite songs.
“A big part of mum’s life was and still is family. My Auntie Sadie (mum’s sister-in-law) and cousins Sharlene, Allison and Sarah have been a big support to us since my mum’s diagnosis. We have always been close, literally, living only a few doors away for all my childhood.
“When I saw the adverts for Alzheimer Scotland’s Memory Walk in Glasgow, I wanted to take part to raise awareness and much needed funds for a cause close to my heart. My sister Laura will also be walking with me and we’ve already been out doing some training to prepare.
“I hope to honour mum’s journey, celebrate her, and contribute in some small way to the work being done by Alzheimer Scotland.
“I want to help ensure that more people understand the reality of living with dementia, not only for those diagnosed but also for their families and loved ones. I’m really looking forward to the atmosphere, sense of community and shared purpose on the day.”
